The dingo is Australia’s wild dog, with pointed ears, a bushy tail and a sharp intelligence that has helped it survive across a huge range of environments. Found throughout mainland Australia, from deserts and grasslands to forests and tropical woodlands, dingoes are adaptable hunters that eat everything from small mammals and reptiles to larger prey. They can live alone or in family groups, with packs often working together to hunt and raise pups. As an apex predator, the dingo plays an important role in keeping ecosystems balanced by influencing the numbers and behaviour of other animals. However, persecution, habitat changes and interbreeding with domestic dogs threaten some populations. Local conservation groups, including the Australian Dingo Foundation, work to protect dingoes, support research and raise awareness of their ecological importance. And while they might look like oversized domestic dogs, dingoes are wild animals with their own rules... maybe think twice before going in for that belly rub.
