The dugong, often called the "sea cow," is a gentle marine mammal that grazes on seagrass meadows in coastal waters. These fascinating creatures are closely related to manatees and distantly to elephants, sharing a similar ancestor! Dugongs can grow up to 3 meters long and weigh over 360 kilograms, yet they glide gracefully underwater, holding their breath for up to six minutes. Unlike manatees, dugongs have fluked tails like dolphins, which they use for propulsion. They are the only fully marine herbivorous mammal, spending their days munching on seagrass, which can turn their teeth greenish! Found in warm coastal waters from East Africa to Australia, dugongs are vulnerable due to habitat loss and slow reproduction. With their soulful eyes and serene demeanor, they’re often mistaken for mermaids in folklore—no wonder sailors once mistook them for mythical sirens!
