It nests in big hollow trees and can live for decades in the wild — but land clearing and the loss of old-growth nesting trees are significant threats. There are five races, two of which are endangered. This design is of the relatively widespread novaehollandiae. Fun fact: its hearing is so precise, it can catch prey in complete darkness without ever seeing it. 🦉
