The straw-necked ibis — affectionately known as the “farmer’s friend” — is the glossy, purple-sheened cousin of the better-known bin-chicken, and it absolutely glows in the sunlight with those metallic greens and blues. Unlike its scavenging relatives, this ibis actually prefers paddocks to bins, striding through farmland with its long curved bill hunting grasshoppers, crickets, beetles and other crop-munching pests. They do still pop up in suburbia sometimes, getting mistaken for bin-chickens. Its name comes from the odd but fabulous straw-like feathers cascading down its neck, giving it a bit of a “feather boa at a gala” vibe. They’re highly social, loud, and love a good group hang — and thanks to their pest-control diet, they’re doing the growers everywhere a solid.
