The magpie-lark, often called a peewee or mudlark, is a familiar black-and-white bird found near water, parks and backyards across much of Australia. Known for its sharp pee-wee! call and bold personality, it feeds on insects and other small creatures picked up from the ground or shallow water. Magpie-larks build impressive mud nests, sometimes using hundreds of beakfuls of wet clay. Fun fact: both parents help build the nest, taking turns to carefully plaster on the mud.
