The satin bowerbird is famous for the male’s glossy blue-black feathers and his obsession with collecting blue objects to decorate an elaborate stick “bower” to impress females. Found in eastern Australian forests and woodlands, they feed on fruit, insects and leaves, and are surprisingly clever problem-solvers. While still relatively common, they rely on healthy forest habitat, and organisations like BirdLife Australia work to protect the bushland corridors they need. Fun fact: males will happily steal blue treasures from neighbouring bowers if they think it’ll give them an edge.
