Green turtles, also known as Chelonia mydas, are majestic marine reptiles that glide gracefully through the oceans. Despite their name, they aren’t always green on the outside—their shell is often brown or olive, patterned beautifully to blend into their surroundings. The "green" comes from the color of their fat, a result of their herbivorous diet, as adult green turtles primarily feed on seagrass and algae. These gentle giants can live up to 80 years and migrate thousands of kilometers between feeding grounds and nesting beaches. Female green turtles are known for their incredible nesting ritual: returning to the very beach where they were born to lay their eggs, guided by Earth’s magnetic field. Unfortunately, they are endangered due to threats like habitat loss, pollution, and poaching, but conservation programs worldwide are striving to ensure these ancient mariners continue their vital role in marine ecosystems.
