The eastern osprey is one of Australia’s most impressive fishing birds, with a striking white head, dark eye stripe and powerful hooked beak. Found around coastal waters, rivers and estuaries, it hunts by hovering above the water before plunging feet-first to snatch fish with its long, curved talons. Specialised spiny scales on its feet and rough, reversible toe pads help it grip slippery fish, because apparently regular feet weren’t enough. Ospreys build large stick nests, often returning to the same site year after year, making the protection of coastal habitat and nesting sites important for their future.
