The fat-tailed dunnart is a tiny nocturnal marsupial with an impressive built-in pantry. Its thick tail stores fat to help it survive when food is scarce. Found across much of southern and central Australia, it shelters during the day before heading out at night to hunt insects, spiders and other small prey. Despite weighing only around 15 grams, these little predators are energetic hunters and can tackle prey surprisingly close to their own size. They face threats from habitat loss, changes to fire regimes and introduced predators, particularly cats and foxes.
