The Gouldian finch is often called Australia’s rainbow bird, with brilliant purple, green, yellow and turquoise plumage that makes it look almost unreal. Native to the tropical savannas of northern Australia, these tiny finches travel in flocks and feed mainly on grass seeds, gathering around waterholes during the dry season. Despite their vibrant colours, wild populations have declined due to habitat loss, altered fire regimes and reduced food availability. Conservation groups like Australian Wildlife Conservancy work to protect and restore the northern habitats these remarkable birds depend on. Males can have red, black or yellow faces — and for some reason, they all seem equally convinced they’re the best-looking bird in the bush.
