The red-tailed black cockatoo, a striking and charismatic parrot native to Australia, is a true standout with its glossy black plumage and brilliant red tail panels that flash like fiery beacons in flight. Found across a range of habitats, from eucalyptus woodlands to coastal regions, this cockatoo plays a vital role in seed dispersal, helping to regenerate forests. Known for their loud, resonant calls, they are social birds often seen in flocks. With a diet of nuts, seeds and berries, they have powerful beaks capable of cracking even the toughest shells. These cockatoos rely on large, mature eucalyptus trees, such as marri or jarrah, for nesting, as the hollow cavities they need take decades to form and generally have to be at least 9m off the ground. Sadly, some populations face habitat loss, making conservation efforts critical to their survival.
