The peacock spider Maratus hesperus is a tiny Western Australian show-off, measuring just a few millimetres long but putting on a courtship display that would make a professional dancer nervous. Males flash their brilliantly patterned abdomens, wave their legs and perform an intricate little dance to catch the attention of a female — who gets to decide whether the performance earns a date or a dinner. Like other peacock spiders, they’re part of an incredibly diverse group of tiny jumping spiders found only in Australia, with more than 100 species now described.
