The red-bellied black snake is one of eastern Australia’s most recognisable snakes, with glossy black scales and a vivid red belly that flashes when it moves. Usually found near wetlands, creeks and forests, it feeds on frogs, fish and other small animals. Despite its intimidating look, it’s generally shy and prefers to slip away rather than confront people. Interestingly, red-bellied black snakes are immune to the venom of the deadly eastern brown snake — which means they sometimes eat them.
