Weedy Seadragon - Unisex Barnard Tank
The weedy seadragon is one of Australia’s most spectacular underwater oddities, covered in leafy appendages that help it disappear among seaweed and seagrass. Found along the southern and eastern coasts of Australia, they drift through shallow coastal waters, feeding on tiny crustaceans by sucking them up with their long, tube-like snouts. And like their seahorse cousins, it’s the males that carry the eggs — attached beneath their tails until they hatch. Weedy seadragons face threats from habitat loss, pollution and damage to the seagrass and seaweed habitats they rely on. In Victoria, the Victorian National Parks Association runs Dragon Quest, a project helping monitor and understand weedy seadragon populations in Port Phillip and Western Port Bays.
